The nearest railway station to Periyar is Kottayam, 114 km away. While proceeding to Periyr by road, one can feel the aroma of tea gardens and spices. October to February is the most suitable time to visit Periyar. Those interested to view elephants may visit Periyar during March and April. Elephants would be found relaxing in the water bodies.
